Lightning AI

Lightning in Time is a Memory - video loop from longer series

Lightning travels at a speed far faster than the human eye. To capture the experience of delayed processing, I have used AI to generate the in between frames creating a frame rate that reflects the speed of lightning translated through a digital 'memory'.

Mathematical Lightning 

Everywhere and Nowhere

I used Generative Coding within Blender to render a video showing all of the mathematicly possible routes for a single lightning bolt at once. This video is rendered from the perspective a person looking up into the bolt as it strikes them from the sky above.

These 3 dimensional renderings are created mathematically creating structures found through out nature including roots, rivers, and human nerves. ​

Lightning Score

Musical Score created by real time input from weather monitoring stations. Each beat of the sound work is triggered by a lightning bolt being recorded anywhere in the world. Relies on public weather data available through blitzortung.org

Lightning appear to follow certain forking patterns that becoming less obvious as they increase in complexity.

Lightning Paintings

Black Lightning

For these paintings I focus on the phenomenon of AfterImage, the perceptual experience of seeing a chromatically inverted echo of an intensely bright light, such as lightning. These are made by painting numerous sprayed layers of acrylic paint on panel and then laser etching photographic imagery of a lightning bolt.

Lightning Automatic drawing

Here I use a web-based platform for generative lightning drawing. It uses a rudimentary lightning algorithm to create a new drawing with every click. 

Previous relevant work - Radical Spirit

I'm including documentation of an earlier work of mine called Radical Spirit because it is structured in a way that is similar to how I am imagining the Nervous System proposal. It included video projections, performance, sculpture, and a pirate television broadcast all incorporated in a single environment.
